Hana Frluckaj is a postdoctoral research fellow at UVA’s Digital Technology for Democracy Lab. Their research focuses on open source software communities, particularly in terms of sustainability, equity, and participation.
As an interdisciplinary researcher, Hana leverages concepts from information studies, software engineering, and human-computer interaction to theorize on OSS participation. They use qualitative and ethnographic methods to explore the experiences of underrepresented developers, i.e., their career trajectories, participation within radical openness, and resistance to corporate exploitation. Their work has been published as CSCW, ICSE, and CHI.
At DTD, Hana will explore the technological democratization potentialites of OSS. They will continue to work with underrepresented contributors to understand alternative technologies and practices while also working with policymakers, civic technologists, and OSS foundations to develop democratization pathways for more OSS contributors.
Hana holds a PhD in information studies from the University of Texas-Austin, with a BSc in electrical and computer engineering with a minor in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University.
